The CSRA-ESEC organization was founded in 1998 as a venue for educational organizations in the CSRA to better coordinate events and collaborate on projects. Originally encompassing a handful of organizations with established educational programs, the organization has expanded its membership to include state, government, non-profit, and academic organizations with any sort of environmental education objective.

CSRA-ESEC initially undertook one joint project per year - the popular Eco-Meet Competition for Middle School students (modeled after the High School Envirothon). In 2004, the group embarked on an expansion of its yearly objectives, adding enviroscape training sessions and ESEC presentations.
